Activity collar on dairy cow

The Product

Collar data. Cycle memory. Conception precision.

Three inputs converge to give you each cow's exact 12-hour breeding window. No herd averages. No guesswork. Per-cow, every cycle.

How It Works

Three data pillars, one precise prediction

Ovum builds a unique reproductive model for each cow in your herd, drawing on three distinct data streams.

01

Activity monitoring

Your existing 3-axis accelerometer collars capture motion patterns every 2 minutes. Ovum extracts the restlessness signature: increased stepping, mounting attempts, and posture changes that define pre-ovulatory behaviour in individual cows. Population-level activity thresholds miss the shy heater; Ovum calibrates to each animal's baseline.

02

Cycle history learning

Over your first 60-day calibration window, Ovum records each confirmed heat event per cow: the timing, intensity, and duration. Most dairy cows have cycle lengths between 17 and 24 days, but that variation is specific to each animal. Ovum learns the individual rhythm, not the population average.

03

Window prediction

When activity patterns begin shifting for a given cow, the model cross-references her cycle history to assign a confidence score and predicted ovulation time. You receive an alert 12 hours before peak fertility opens, and a close-window alert when the window ends. All of it arrives on your phone before you need it.

Collar Compatibility

What Ovum reads

Ovum is designed to work with the activity collar hardware already on your farm. No rip-and-replace. No new capital expenditure.

Compatible data inputs include 3-axis accelerometer collar systems that export raw activity counts or motion scores at 2-minute or finer intervals. Ovum ingests these via API sync or CSV upload.

For farms without full collar coverage, manual heat observation records can be entered directly. Ovum will build cycle history from those records and flag when collar data would improve prediction confidence for specific animals.

Supported data formats
  • 3-axis accelerometer CSV exports (standard column schema)
  • Generic activity-count per 2-minute interval files
  • Manual observation records (date, cow ID, observed heat indicator)
  • Cycle history spreadsheets from any existing herd management records

The Model

How the prediction gets sharper

The Ovum model is not a rule-based threshold system. It builds a probabilistic cycle map for each cow from her own recorded history. Here is what that means in practice.

1
Calibration (cycles 1-3)
Ovum observes activity data without issuing alerts. It is learning each cow's baseline motion level, her typical cycle interval, and the shape of her pre-oestrus activity signature.
2
First predictions
From cycle 4 onward, Ovum issues breeding window alerts. Early alerts carry a confidence score, visible in the notification. A score below 70% means the model is still learning that cow's pattern.
3
Continuous improvement
Each confirmed conception (or confirmed missed window) feeds back into the model. By cycles 6-8, prediction confidence stabilises at each cow's biological ceiling. Some cows have very regular cycles, others have wider variance. Ovum reports this honestly.
4
Handling irregular cows
For cows with high cycle-length variance or post-partum anovulation, Ovum flags them separately and lowers the alert confidence threshold. You still get a notification noting higher uncertainty. No cow is silently dropped from monitoring.

Integration

Works with your existing setup

Ovum connects to what you already have. No new hardware, no new collar vendor, no on-farm gateway requirement.

Getting data in

API collar sync
If your collar system has a data export API, Ovum polls it every 4 hours. No manual uploads. Activity data flows automatically once your API key is entered in Ovum settings.
CSV import
Download your collar data in standard CSV format and upload it to Ovum. The importer handles common column schemas. You can schedule this daily or upload on demand.
Manual entry
No collars on part of your herd? Enter heat observations manually by cow ID. Ovum will build cycle history from those records and start issuing predictions once enough data is accumulated.

Getting alerts out

Push notification
iOS and Android app. Alerts arrive 12 hours before each cow's window opens. A second notification fires at the window close. Notifications respect your quiet-hours preference.
SMS alert
Text message to any AU mobile. Cow ID, window open time, window close time, and confidence score in a single readable SMS. Works without app install.
Email digest
6am daily email listing all breeding windows opening in the next 24 hours. Useful as a secondary channel for herd managers who prefer a single morning briefing.
